Unix time starts at 1970-01-01T00:00:00Z. Local time uses your browser timezone; UTC is the same everywhere.

What does this tool do?

A Unix timestamp counts time from 1970-01-01T00:00:00Z. Choose seconds or milliseconds to see a readable UTC and local date, or convert a timezone-aware date back to Unix time.

When to use this tool

Translate an epoch value from a log or API response into a readable date, or convert a dated event into Unix time. Confirm whether the source uses seconds or milliseconds and include an explicit timezone when entering a date.

How to use Timestamp Converter

  1. Select timestamp-to-date or date-to-timestamp.
  2. Choose seconds or milliseconds. For dates, use an ISO string with a timezone.
  3. Convert and copy the UTC, local, and Unix representations.

Unix timestamps: seconds vs. milliseconds

Common questions

Seconds or milliseconds?

A modern Unix timestamp in seconds is typically 10 digits; milliseconds typically have 13. Always confirm the unit in the source system.

Why require a timezone?

An explicit Z or ±HH:MM offset prevents ambiguous local date interpretation.
